Getting Started

So, you want to trace your PolishRoots®!  We have collected resources on this page which we believe will give you tips on how to begin Tracing Your Roots.

The genealogical Mantra is work backwards from what you know, so with that in mind, your first step is to collect all the information you can about your immediate family, then to your grandparents, etc.  Along the way it is a good idea to find any other people who may be researching the same family so you can join forces.  Take a look at the SurnameSearch database to see if anyone else is conducting similar research.

Once you have that in hand you can begin to make the leap to the "Old Country", BUT, make sure you have an understanding of the history of Poland which is fairly complicated.

To assist you with locating the ship that your ancestor came to the New World on, we have collected resources on the Immigration & Ships pages.
